Prospect theory’s loss aversion is robust to stake size

چکیده

Abstract Several papers have challenged the robustness of loss aversion, claiming that it is context-dependent and disappears for small stakes. These use a behavioral definition aversion may be confounded by diminishing sensitivity probability/event weighting under new version prospect theory (PT). We perform theory-based test controls these confounds. found significant both stakes high The overall coefficient varied between 1.25 1.45, less than commonly observed. Loss decreased slightly stakes, but effect was usually insignificant. Overall, our results indicate that, PT, robust to stake size.

Loss Aversion Under Prospect Theory: A Parameter-Free Measurement

A body of qualitative evidence shows that loss aversion, a phenomenon formalized in prospect theory, can explain a variety of field and experimental data. Quantifications of loss aversion are, however, hindered by the absence of a general preference-based method to elicit the utility for gains and losses simultaneously. This paper proposes such a method and uses it to measure loss aversion in a...

Myopic Prospect Theory vs. Myopic Loss Aversion: How General Is the Phenomenon?

Individuals often act myopically when they evaluate sequences of investment opportunities. For a loss averse decision maker, such myopia causes the sequence to look less attractive and might result in the rejection of an investment program that would have been accepted in less myopic view (Benartzi and Thaler, 1995). In this paper, we argue that the relation between myopia and the attractivenes...

Loss aversion is an affective forecasting error.

Loss aversion occurs because people expect losses to have greater hedonic impact than gains of equal magnitude. In two studies, people predicted that losses in a gambling task would have greater hedonic impact than would gains of equal magnitude, but when people actually gambled, losses did not have as much of an emotional impact as they predicted. People overestimated the hedonic impact of los...

Risk Aversion in Cumulative Prospect Theory

This paper characterizes the conditions for risk aversion in cumulative prospect theory where risk aversion is defined in the strong sense of Rothschild and Stiglitz (1970). Under weaker assumptions than differentiability we show that risk aversion implies convex weighting functions for gains and for losses but not necessarily a concave utility function. Also, we investigate the exact relations...

Loss Aversion, Framing, and Bargaining: The Implications of Prospect Theory for International Conflict

Prospect theory deviates from expected-utility theory by positing that how people frame a problem around a reference point has a critical influence on their choices and that people tend to overweight losses with respect to comparable gains, to be risk-averse with respect to gains and riskacceptant with respect to losses, and to respond to probabilities in a nonlinear manner. This study examines...
